Japan PM demands Aus halt anti-whaling 'sabotage'

TOKYO — Japan's Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama Tuesday asked his visiting Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd to rein in activists disrupting Japan's annual whale hunt, describing their actions as "sabotage."
Japan's whaling fleet left for its annual Southern Ocean hunt in waters south of Australia last month. Japan uses a loophole in an international moratorium that allows killing whales for scientific research.
Hatoyama retorted that Japan's whaling activities complied with international law

Militant environmental activists of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society have set out to disrupt the hunt and are this year using a futuristic powerboat which holds the record for the fastest world circumnavigation.
Hatoyama told Rudd that the Sea Shepherd actions threaten the safety of the whaling fleet and its crew and requested Australia take appropriate action, according to a Japanese foreign ministry statement.
The statement suggested that Rudd again threatened legal action against Japan over the hunt of the sea giants if "a diplomatic resolution proves difficult," echoing similar remarks he made last week in Australia.
Canberra has threatened to haul Japan before the International Court of Justice or the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. In a radio show last week, Rudd said: "I've said that before, I'm serious about it."
But Hatoyama retorted that Japan's whaling activities complied with international law.
The centre-left Australian leader made the remarks during a brief stopover in Japan on his way to UN climate change talks in Copenhagen.
Japan's Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada last week defended whaling and asked Australia to understand that it is part of Japan's heritage.

PM Jets out for Sushi and Sake – But no real action against whaling

Monday, 14 December 2009

The Prime Minister is jetting out for sushi and sake in Japan but real action against whaling is not on the menu.

The PM is presuming Australians have forgotten all the times over all the years that he repeatedly promised international court action against whaling.

To refresh his memory I provide a reminder of the promises that he and Mr Garrett made, below.

Given his promises, Mr Rudd must lay down a deadline for Japan to halt its sham whaling program.

If Japan won’t agree to stop killing the whales, the Prime Minister must follow through with his oft-repeated promise to launch legal action against the barbaric practice.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen the Government more focused on haranguing anti-whaling protestors than tackling those who are holding the harpoons.

Today, the best this Prime Minister can say, as he prepares to jet out to Japan is that: “We'd like to do this in a friendlier, diplomatic way.”

How times have changed.

No wonder the Japanese don’t take him seriously on this issue any more.

Labor will: Take Japan to international courts such as the International Court of Justice or the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to end the slaughter of whales;

A Federal Labor Government will initiate legal action in the international courts to stop the slaughter of whales.”

Rudd/ Garrett statement, ‘Federal Labor’s Plan to Counter International Whaling’, 19 May 2007

“Labor in Parliament today called on the Howard Government to initiate a case against Japan in the International Court of Justice.”

Kevin Rudd, media release, 24 May 2005

“Our challenge to the Howard Government is to prepare a case now for the International Court of Justice which will bring the international public spotlight on Japan’s claims about its scientific quota of whaling.”

Kevin Rudd, media conference, 20 May 2005

“Regardless of what happens at the IWC meeting, the Howard Government should take Japan to the International Court of Justice to end the barbaric slaughter of whales once and for all.”

Rudd/ Albanese media release, 20 June 2005

“We cannot afford another year of complacency. The Howard Government must act immediately to take Japan to the International Court of Justice.”

Rudd/ Albanese media release, 18 July 2005

“We believe that we need to add to the evidence base when it comes to presenting a case before the International Court of Justice.”

Kevin Rudd, doorstop, Labor’s whaling policy, 20 May 2007

“…take Japan and any other country necessary, to court in the International Court of Justice, in order to bring a stop to this practice.”

Kevin Rudd, doorstop, Labor’s whaling policy, 20 May 2007

“Our approach from beginning has been, what do we need to do in terms of creating evidence for the construction of a possible legal case against Japan to bring a halt to commercial whaling.”

Kevin Rudd, media conference, 17 January 2008

“I know this will be a bit rocky, I understand that, but we have a responsibility here as well.”

Regarding action in the ICJ, interview with Laurie Oakes, Sunday Program, 10 February 2008

On 14 February 2007, Mr Garrett said: “A Rudd Labor Government will pull out all stops in the international courts to stop whaling for all time.”

On 9 March 2007, Mr Garrett said: “A Rudd Labor Government will increase diplomatic pressure on Japan and pull out all stops in the international courts to stop whaling for all time.”

On 7 May 2007, Mr Garrett said: “A Rudd Labor Government will increase diplomatic pressure on Japan and pull out all stops in the international courts to stop whaling for all time.”

(So much for pulling out all the stops.)

The power of Facebook Pages and how to use it....

I have started two new Facebook Fan Pages for two very important causes!
Its nice to have groups and causes and many Facebook friends but its more important
to start using the Facebook Pages to keep up with your fans! I am overwhelmed by the number of people that have joined right from the start more than 600 fans for both pages on day ONE is a very good start! And it shows that ONE PERSON can realy make a difference! Never forget that you should do whatever you can.. for its the biggest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do so little!

First of all i have started Mashua against FGM to honour the great work of my good friend Lucy Mashua ! Please join her in her battle to fight FGM! You can now see the Fan Box for this new page right here in the
left frame and become a fan and follow the latest updates!
Read her latest blog

While we celebrate Christmas Girls undergo FGM and Early marriages in Kenya!

to see how you can help her!

Second i have started a fan page for the Painted Dog Conservation a cause that my good friend Fred van Olphen has been supporting for many many years and that needs more attention in order to save the Painted Dogs from extinction! I have also added this Fan Box for this new page right here in the left frame and become a fan and follow the latest updates!

Find out more about making a difference to try and stop Female Genital Mutilation
See what you can do to help Dr. Gregory Rasmussen to protect the painted dogs from poachers!

Laura Dohmen a nine year old girl from the Netherlands she is the youngest ambassador for the painted dog conservation in Zimbabwe and is in a rally to win EUR 2.500,-- for the Painted Dog Conservation Project! She has a very good chance to win this money with your vote and support! She in ranked Number two now that would mean 1.500 EURO for the painted dogs..
But i am sure we can help her win this contest!
Please vote http://tinyurl.com/VoteforLaura

End Mountaintop Removal! Watch this video!

Today, the confluence between mountaintop removal coal mining and climate change is front and center on the streets of Charleston, West Virginia and on stage at the "COP15" United Nations Climate Summit in Copenhagen.
In Charleston, activists from around the region are gathering in front of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection headquarters to demand an end to blasting at Coal River Mountain -- ground zero in the fight against mountaintop removal coal mining.
And in Copenhagen, Google is unveiling a new layer in Google Earth that dramatically illustrates the choice to be made at Coal River Mountain -- a choice between a clean energy future and the increased threat of climate change.

As Lorelei Scarbro, who lives in Rock Creek, West Virginia, at the foot of Coal River Mountain, says in the video, Coal River Mountain represents a crossroads in our future.
Massey Energy plans to mine more than 6000 acres of mountaintop at Coal River Mountain, which would destroy the opportunity to build a 320 megawatt wind farm on the ridges of Coal River Mountain.
Instead of 320 megawatts of clean energy that would power more than 70,000 homes indefinitely, Massey's plans would release 134 million tons of C02 -- the equivalent of putting 1.5 million more cars on the road for 17 years.
That's what makes Coal River Mountain a "cauldron of Climate Change," in Lorelei's words. That's why Google is showing millions of Google Earth users and the delegates in Copenhagen what's at stake at Coal River Mountain, and why people from around the region are gathering today in Charleston.
Can you stand with the activists in Charleston and the delegates in Copenhagen today by taking two simple actions?
1. Watch the Coal River Mountain Video and forward it to your friends and family. Ask them to join you in stopping mountaintop removal coal mining by signing up at iLoveMountains.org.
2. Email your Senators and tell them to pass the Appalachian Restoration Act. If Congress is serious about addressing climate change, we need this bill to dramatically reduce mountaintop removal coal mining, which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
Thank you for taking a moment today to help secure a clean energy future for all of us.

What is The Story of Cap & Trade? Check this story!

The Story of Cap & Trade from Story of Stuff Project on Vimeo.

What is The Story of Cap & Trade?

The Story of Cap & Trade is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the leading climate solution being discussed at Copenhagen and on Capitol Hill. Host Annie Leonard introduces the energy traders and Wall Street financiers at the heart of this scheme and reveals the "devils in the details" in current cap and trade proposals: free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you’ve heard about cap and trade, but aren’t sure how it works (or who benefits), this is the film is for you.

Modern environmentalism is entering a new phase. The idealists have been shoved to the margins. Corporate partners that have mastered public relations are hiring political lobbyists to make the case for government regulations that will shift the cost of controlling carbon emissions to taxpayers and generate revenues for private sector players.

You should realy go and see this:
Carbon Trade is BAD NEWS for this planet!
The USA will have to REDUCE REDUCE REDUCE! 80% until 2050....but its not just about CARBON DIOXIDE its much more about the complete impact that the modern society has on this planet.... We need 3 planets in Europe 5 in the USA if all the world would live like we do...

Al Gore could become world's first carbon billionaire
Al Gore, the former US vice president, could become the world's first carbon billionaire after investing heavily in green energy companies.

Last year Mr Gore's venture capital firm loaned a small California firm $75m to develop energy-saving technology.

The company, Silver Spring Networks, produces hardware and software to make the electricity grid more efficient.

The real climate change catastrophe

The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants, the New York Times reports. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts.

The move means that venture capital company Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years.

Few people have been as vocal about the urgency of global warming and the need to reinvent the way the world produces and consumes energy as Mr Gore. And few have put as much money behind their advocacy and are as well positioned to profit from this green transformation, if and when it comes.

Critics, mostly on the political right and among global warming sceptics, say Mr. Gore is poised to become the world's first "carbon billionaire," profiteering from government policies he supports that would direct billions of dollars to the business ventures he has invested in.

Representative Marsha Blackburn, Republican of Tennessee, has claimed that Mr Gore stood to benefit personally from the energy and climate policies he was urging Congress to adopt.

Mr Gore had said that he is simply putting his money where his mouth is.

"Do you think there is something wrong with being active in business in this country?" Mr. Gore said. "I am proud of it. I am proud of it."

Thanks to misreading the significance of a brief period of rising temperatures at the end of the 20th century, the Western world (but not India or China) is now contemplating measures that add up to the most expensive economic suicide note ever written.

 Al Gore’s Carbon Empire:
Cashing in on Climate Change

Modern environmentalism is entering a new phase. The idealists have been shoved to the margins. Corporate partners that have mastered public relations are hiring political lobbyists to make the case for government regulations that will shift the cost of controlling carbon emissions to taxpayers and generate revenues for private sector players.

President Barack Obama's announcement that the U.S. will offer an unprecedented pledge to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent by 2020 at the Copenhagen climate talks in December may seem impressive at first blush. But look closely, and you'll see the "cuts" he has offered are, at least in the short-term, essentially meaningless. The reason is twofold. First: The cuts start from a 2005 baseline, when the baseline the scientific community has put forward is 1990. As a result, these cuts translate to a mere 4 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, when what we need is a 25-40 percent cut in U.S. emissions below 1990 levels by 2020.

Reason number two: Even these measly cuts could all be met by the buying and selling of an invisible, unverifiable, entirely manmade commodity: the carbon offset.

Obama's offer of cuts is based on the cap and trade proposals that have passed the House and are moving through the Senate. Both versions allow polluters to meet their pollution targets by actual cuts or by trading excess pollution with another polluter who has exceeded his targets. Carbon offsets go one step further and allow polluters to carry on polluting so long as they pay a small penance for every ton of CO2 they emit above their cap. Carbon offsets are attractive to polluters because they are, in general, a cheaper price to pay than actual cuts or traded emissions. However, buyer beware: cap and trade proposals now on the table will open up a whole new derivatives market in carbon, a market open to gaming, corruption, and the creation of a new "carbon bubble" that, when it bursts, could take down far more than just our economy. Furthermore, the quality of carbon offsets within the cap and trade program are, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, virtually impossible to verify.

An Open Letter to President Obama from Michael Moore

An Open Letter to President Obama from Michael Moore

Dear President Obama,
Do you really want to be the new "war president"? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do -- destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they've always heard is true -- that all politicians are alike. I simply can't believe you're about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn't so.
It is not your job to do what the generals tell you to do. We are a civilian-run government. WE tell the Joint Chiefs what to do, not the other way around. That's the way General Washington insisted it must be. That's what President Truman told General MacArthur when MacArthur wanted to invade China. "You're fired!," said Truman, and that was that. And you should have fired Gen. McChrystal when he went to the press to preempt you, telling the press what YOU had to do. Let me be blunt: We love our kids in the armed services, but we f*#&in' hate these generals, from Westmoreland in Vietnam to, yes, even Colin Powell for lying to the UN with his made-up drawings of WMD (he has since sought redemption).
So now you feel backed into a corner. 30 years ago this past Thursday (Thanksgiving) the Soviet generals had a cool idea -- "Let's invade Afghanistan!" Well, that turned out to be the final nail in the USSR coffin.
There's a reason they don't call Afghanistan the "Garden State" (though they probably should, seeing how the corrupt President Karzai, whom we back, has his brother in the heroin trade raising poppies). Afghanistan's nickname is the "Graveyard of Empires." If you don't believe it, give the British a call. I'd have you call Genghis Khan but I lost his number. I do have Gorbachev's number though. It's + 41 22 789 1662. I'm sure he could give you an earful about the historic blunder you're about to commit.
With our economic collapse still in full swing and our precious young men and women being sacrificed on the altar of arrogance and greed, the breakdown of this great civilization we call America will head, full throttle, into oblivion if you become the "war president." Empires never think the end is near, until the end is here. Empires think that more evil will force the heathens to toe the line -- and yet it never works. The heathens usually tear them to shreds.
Choose carefully, President Obama. You of all people know that it doesn't have to be this way. You still have a few hours to listen to your heart, and your own clear thinking. You know that nothing good can come from sending more troops halfway around the world to a place neither you nor they understand, to achieve an objective that neither you nor they understand, in a country that does not want us there. You can feel it in your bones.
I know you know that there are LESS than a hundred al-Qaeda left in Afghanistan! A hundred thousand troops trying to crush a hundred guys living in caves? Are you serious? Have you drunk Bush's Kool-Aid? I refuse to believe it.
Your potential decision to expand the war (while saying that you're doing it so you can "end the war") will do more to set your legacy in stone than any of the great things you've said and done in your first year. One more throwing a bone from you to the Republicans and the coalition of the hopeful and the hopeless may be gone -- and this nation will be back in the hands of the haters quicker than you can shout "tea bag!"
Choose carefully, Mr. President. Your corporate backers are going to abandon you as soon as it is clear you are a one-term president and that the nation will be safely back in the hands of the usual idiots who do their bidding. That could be Wednesday morning.
We the people still love you. We the people still have a sliver of hope. But we the people can't take it anymore. We can't take your caving in, over and over, when we elected you by a big, wide margin of millions to get in there and get the job done. What part of "landslide victory" don't you understand?
Don't be deceived into thinking that sending a few more troops into Afghanistan will make a difference, or earn you the respect of the haters. They will not stop until this country is torn asunder and every last dollar is extracted from the poor and soon-to-be poor. You could send a million troops over there and the crazy Right still wouldn't be happy. You would still be the victim of their incessant venom on hate radio and television because no matter what you do, you can't change the one thing about yourself that sends them over the edge.
The haters were not the ones who elected you, and they can't be won over by abandoning the rest of us.
President Obama, it's time to come home. Ask your neighbors in Chicago and the parents of the young men and women doing the fighting and dying if they want more billions and more troops sent to Afghanistan. Do you think they will say, "No, we don't need health care, we don't need jobs, we don't need homes. You go on ahead, Mr. President, and send our wealth and our sons and daughters overseas, 'cause we don't need them, either."
What would Martin Luther King, Jr. do? What would your grandmother do? Not send more poor people to kill other poor people who pose no threat to them, that's what they'd do. Not spend billions and trillions to wage war while American children are sleeping on the streets and standing in bread lines.
All of us that voted and prayed for you and cried the night of your victory have endured an Orwellian hell of eight years of crimes committed in our name: torture, rendition, suspension of the bill of rights, invading nations who had not attacked us, blowing up neighborhoods that Saddam "might" be in (but never was), slaughtering wedding parties in Afghanistan. We watched as hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were slaughtered and tens of thousands of our brave young men and women were killed, maimed, or endured mental anguish -- the full terror of which we scarcely know.
When we elected you we didn't expect miracles. We didn't even expect much change. But we expected some. We thought you would stop the madness. Stop the killing. Stop the insane idea that men with guns can reorganize a nation that doesn't even function as a nation and never, ever has.
Stop, stop, stop! For the sake of the lives of young Americans and Afghan civilians, stop. For the sake of your presidency, hope, and the future of our nation, stop. For God's sake, stop.
Tonight we still have hope.
Tomorrow, we shall see. The ball is in your court. You DON'T have to do this. You can be a profile in courage. You can be your mother's son.
We're counting on you.
Michael Moore
P.S. There's still time to have your voice heard. Call the White House at 202-456-1111 or email the President.

A Survivor’s Battle Against Female Genital Mutilation

Interview with my good friend Lucy Mashua
A Survivor’s Battle Against Female Genital Mutilation – by Jamie Glazov
Jamie Glazov is Frontpage Magazine's editor.

Lucy Mashua confronts the mutilators world-wide.

Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Lucy Mashua, the Global Ambassador for fighting FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) and standing up for Women’s Rights. She is the Chairperson of sponsoredgirl.com, a worldwide campaign against FGM.

FP: Lucy Mashua, thank you for joining Frontpage Interview.

Add Lucy Mashua on Facebook
Follow Lucy Mashua On Twitter
Tell us about your background and your own personal story.

Mashua: I was born 30 years ago in a small village in southern Kenya in Rift valley province. I come from the Maasai tribe, which is known for its cultural wearing of beads, red ochre and wraps. We are nomadic people and move with our animals from one place to another in search of pastures, as it’s a semi arid area. We have three major groups in Africa: Bantu, Cushites and Nilots.

My tribe falls into the Nilots group and the tribe from which Obama’s father comes from, Luo. We migrated from Egypt in 16 AD, named after the river Nile and most of us are black Jews, but practicing Christianity. I am a Christian.

I love my tribe so much that I want them to treat women and children right by ending FGM and early child marriage. Women and girls are not men’s properties. It is our God- given right not to be mutilated and married off at a tender age. I am the first born of a family of six and underwent FGM at the age of 9 one early morning with a group of other girls. Vaginal genocide was committed on us.

And now here I am living to tell and be a voice for the voiceless.

FP: Why does your tribe practise FGM? What is its philosophy? And why does it also engage in child marriage?

Mashua: My tribe practices FGM because they are ignorant and brainwashed since the days of Pharaoh in Egypt as they migrated to East Africa with this tradition. The philosophy is that women will be more tame and controllable. When a woman is made to feel like she is an object and not 100% human, she will fall for it. They become puppets and not valued, but it didn’t work with me.

They also engage in early childhood marriage to control and tame women because if you are married off at 12, by the time you are 18 you are just worn out and you will never see the need to explore life. The younger the girls are, the easier it is to control and manipulate them. It’s also about wealth. The more wives and cattle you have, the wealthier you are and you have more property.

FP: I am sorry to ask, but can you kindly share with us the horrible experience you suffered of FGM? Who did this to you? What were the consequences? How did you cope with it?

Mashua: One chilly morning in a group of 29 girls, we were mutilated. I was tied with a rope because I was screaming and begging them to stop. Some girls were considered brave for not crying aloud. But I know their heart cried out loud. I could hear their cry and still do.

It is so hard for me to talk about this. It’s so fresh. I am still so traumatized. They used the same knife on us, not caring about any infections. These are tradition mutilators and midwives that perform this savagery. My mom could not watch this. Up to now, I am scared of any human blood. I scream when I accidentally cut myself. A few days ago I passed out when I cut my finger and I hurt my back as I live by myself. No one could help me.

I have nightmares. I have never coped. I have very painful PMS. I have extra glands growing so I need surgery. I have scar tissues. That’s why my vagina muscles hurt. I will live with this for the rest of my life. I will never cope but one thing for sure I will never stop voicing out against FGM.

One day I will reach the World Court and criminalize globally FGM. I swear I am going to reach there. I am now building a very big network of very committed people. I aspire even to be a human rights movie documentary producer. I am going to get words out there and catch the attention of all kinds of good people. I will kick FGM ass out of this planet. And that makes me smile.

FP: I am sorry that I asked you to talk about this horrible monstrosity that was committed against you. Thank you for sharing it with us. I speak on behalf of Fronpagemag.com to say that our heart is with you and all the victims. We feel your pain and stand beside you in this battle to stop this violence against little girls and women.

You have suffered some persecution and terrible ordeals because of your fight against FGM while you were in Africa. Tell us what happened to you.

Mashua: First I was rejected by my own society, relatives and friends because of my strong uncompromised belief that women are human too and that no one should take a razor, knife or sharp glass to cut off our clitoris.

No man owns a woman and no one has the right to beat or hit a woman. I have watched my mom suffer at the hands of men and I had enough and began my rebellion by not obeying what men wanted from me and I knew then I have begun a war.

As young as 6 years old I would open my mouth and shout to the top of my voice in a gathering to speak my mind out. Of course I would get beatings but I grew immune. I could not cry anymore from the beatings but I cry out when my friends and relatives undergo FGM.

My fight against FGM has landed me in jail as a protester. I have suffered beatings, rejection, sexual abuse, separation from my babies. I have been tortured physically, sexually and emotionally. I have physical scars all over my body. Up to this time there are times my mind goes back and it’s like a horror movie. I suffered a great deal but I thank God almighty for America.

FP: What efforts are you now making to stop FGM? What resistance are you confronting?

Mashua: Since the day I stepped foot in the United States, I have been leading a fight against FGM. I have received help from my attorneys Roy Petty and Daniel Stewart, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and many organizations, such as the Center for Survivors of Torture and Human rights Initiatives.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson held my hand and stood by me. Annually I am a guest speaker to her World of Peace Women Conference. She even introduced me to President Obama back in 2007. He recognized my efforts on human rights issues and said he was proud of me in a letter he wrote to me.

The Congresswoman is a great friend. She helps me in many big ways that you cannot imagine and they are very personal. She went ahead and introduced me to my adopted brother J. Kendel Johnson, who has always been there for me, even in my hospital bed during my reconstructive surgery. He is an angel.

Parkland hospital surgeons saved my life and reduced my pain and body struggle by 60%. Many individuals groups supported me and still support me with my campaign here in the United States.

I began my campaign officially in 1999 in Kenya by holding demonstrations, speaking in seminars, radio and television programmes and in other East and Central Africans countries. I have currently launched a world wide campaign to stop FGM in Europe. I am the chairperson of sponsoredgirls.com. It’s not always been easy. First, resistance from my own people, then resistance from traditional mutilators who say that I am trying to destroy their only means of income.

FP: How about the Left? They pretend they are for human rights?

Mashua: Leftists pay lip service to women’s rights, but they are full of empty words. They derive fame and recognition from the pain and suffering of women. They only talk and travel just to show off; they do nothing to help or join in the fight against FGM.

FP: Expand for us on why leftist feminists and the Left in general abandons the girls who are the victims of FGM, especially those under Islam? They simply cannot bring themselves to criticize adversarial cultures and religions right?

Mashua: It’s simple: they don’t care about the harmful cultures. All they care about is opening their mouth or scribbling some words online or on paper to act as if they care and so far they have scooped several Grammies for best actors.

They bow down and worship the women haters to achieve favors and recognition. It’s high time we smoke these hypocrites out. I cannot stand them anymore I even don’t want their money to support my campaign because it’s blood money and evil-haunted money.

I would rather crawl and beg in the streets to sustain my campaign instead of working with such people.

The leading member of the Women Development Organization in Kenya, the vice chair, said this about FGM: “Unlike other gender issues, such as access to education, FGM is viewed as cultural practice, which, if threatened, endangers the cohesion of an entire community.” Her name is Rukia Subow and she is a supporter of the mutilators and of mutilation. She is the vice chair of Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization–or MYWO–a leading Kenyan women’s rights group based in Nairobi. She writes: “FGM is considered most significant rite of passage to adulthood, enhancing tribal cohesion, providing girls with important recognition from peers.”

This is an organisation that is funded and works with the leftists in the West. I went to court to sue this organisation and its leadership with other 10 women and we lost and ended up in jail. We were beaten up and threatened just because we wanted them to womanup.

Another example is Ricken Patel of AVAAZ who grew up in Kenya. He told me that FGM is not an important issue and cannot beat climate change and his organisation will not help us to protect girls from FGM. Believe me, religion is a playing card here because this pretender doesn’t want to step on the toes of religion leaders and haters of women. Then a few days later he put a cause on Facebook that he cares about sex slavery. I told him these girls run away from their home to escape the crude culture of mutilation and child brides and end up in the streets where they are captured by educated heartless people for sex slavery and it’s so painful because it happened to someone very dear to me. She disappeared for years. She was only 11

In the Washington Post, Secretary Clinton wrote a column “Fighting Modern Slavery” lamenting worldwide sex trafficking. The root causes of sex trafficking are poverty, illiteracy, and powerlessness. Gender inequality is the basis for all three. I am hoping to represent the Department of State in a two week conference next year in Sierra Leone.

FP: You come from a tribe that is made of up Christians, and yet there was FGM. This is strange as Christianity would be completely against this kind of thing. It is in Islam where this is most occurring and Islamic theology sanctions it. Tell us also about your experience with Islam and Muslims in terms of FGM today.

Mashua: Yes my tribe is Christian and also full of traditional believers. I don’t know why they practice it because there is no single Bible verse that says to mutilate women. As I said earlier, it’s a way of controlling women. It has nothing to do with Christianity and they do not point to Christianity. They carried this tradition from Egypt in 16 AD (days of Pharoh). As Nilots, we immigrated to East Africa.

My experience with Islam on FGM is very sad. As you correctly point out, a majority of people who practice FGM on women are of the Islamic faith and in the Muslim countries that I have visited their women and children have encountered the worst form of it, and many reconstructive surgeons can testify to this. It is a form of control and manipulation in the name of religion.

The good news is that there many Muslims who are rising to end any form of torture against women.

FP: That is great but the problem is that Muslims point to traditional Islamic teachings that sanction FGM. This is the way they keep it in placed. That is why when Egypt, for example, banned FGM in 1996, an Egyptian court overturned the ban in July 1997 after Islamic clerics went on a rampage to bring it back, pointing to Islamic teachings and ideology. Islamic tradition, for instance, records the Prophet Muhammad emphasizing that circumcising girls is “a preservation of honor for women.” A legal manual endorsed by Al-Azhar University of Cairo, which is the oldest and most prestigious university in the Islamic world, states that circumcision is obligatory for both boys and girls.

The sexual mutilation of girls is in the interests of those who control the structure of Islamic gender apartheid. Keeping FGM legitimized and institutionalized is one of the most effective means that Islamic gender apartheid keeps women subjugated and caged.

Yes, let’s hope that Muslim reformers can be empowered to fight FGM, but in order to do so they have to confront the misogyny and demonization of female sexuality that is embedded in Islamic theology.

So where does your battle stand now as we speak?

Mashua: We all read the harmful Muslim remarks on Beyonce after she said she was going to perform in Egypt:

“Beyonce, queen of the crusader whores and puppet of the Zionist entertainment complex, plans to bring her filthy sex act to the heart of the Muslim world with a concert in Cairo. Not since al-Malik al-Adil Nur ad-Din Abu al-Qasim Mahmud Ibn ‘Imad ad-Din Zangi fought the crusaders in Damascus has the Muslim world faced such a threat.”

“If Beyonce is allowed to go ahead with her insolent sex party, all of our daughters risk growing up whores. Soon, they will dare to show their ankles in a public setting, or sit in a room with a grown man who is not an immediate family member.”

“If Beyonce insists on traveling to Egypt, she must be met with fierce resistance. She should be arrested and made to have a female circumcision in order to correct her wicked urges. If she objects, she must be stoned to death. Only then can our daughters be safe from Western vice and debauchery.”

Wow, tell me what kind of religion it is that hates women so much to the core? It’s simple: women are not allowed to enjoy sex or laughter or just the gift of life because of these Islamic attitudes and teachings. Look what happened at the Fort Hood shooting. The authorities knew about Nidal Hasan’s jihadist views but they were afraid to report him because of political correctness. And the fear of not taking action cost us our blood and lives. Believe me there are so many of the major Hasans out there. It’s high time we call a spade a spade.

Five hundred thousand women are still dying in childbirth every year and the promise of universal access to reproductive health and family planning made at the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt in 1994 has been more honored in the breach than in the implementation. A.majority of women’s deaths in these cases are caused by early women rights violations (i.e. FGM, child brides, etc.)

On Common Ground must expand the discussion to the entire planet. What we do here in this country has an effect on the entire world’s view of women, on their status, on their role in human affairs. America, we are the hope of the world. Let’s stand together and lets not be scared of the haters and leftists.

FP: Thank you Lucy Mashua. Final words?

Mashua: When the world takes care of women, women take care of the world. What does taking care of women mean? It means that people rejoice equally at the birth of a girl or a boy. Every single human being ever born has come from the womb of a woman. Women risk their very lives to ensure the propagation of the species. If women lack health and education and choices in their lives, humanity suffers. If women disappear, humanity disappears. It is really that simple. So take care of women.

FP: Lucy Mashua, you are an inspiration to us all. We encourage all of our readers to go to sponsoredgirl.com and help join the fight against FGM.

Please affirm the Charter for Compassion and spread the word!

On February 28, 2008 Karen Armstrong won the TED Prize and made a wish: for help creating, launching and propagating a Charter for Compassion. Since that day, thousands of people have contributed to the process so that on November 12, 2009 the Charter was unveiled to the world.

Karen Armstrong’s Wish
“I wish that you would help with the creation, launch and propagation of a Charter for Compassion, crafted by a group of leading inspirational thinkers from the three Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam and based on the fundamental principles of universal justice and respect.”

The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.

It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

The golden rule
The Golden Rule requires that we use empathy -- moral imagination -- to put ourselves in others' shoes. We should act toward them as we would want them to act toward us. We should refuse, under any circumstance, to carry out actions which would cause them harm.

Each name added makes the compassionate voice a more potent force in the world. Let us make the silent majority a challenge to extremism and hatred.

How social are the social media?

Lets take a look at the Wikipedia definition of social media first...

Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media uses Internet and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content"[1]. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM). Social media utilization is believed to be a driving factor in the idea that the current period in time will be defined as the Attention Age.

Social media can be said to have three components;

1. Concept (art, information, or meme).
2. Media (physical, electronic, or verbal).
3. Social interface (intimate direct, community engagement, social viral, electronic broadcast or syndication, or other physical media such as print).

Primarily, social media depend on interactions between people as the discussion and integration of words to build shared-meaning, using technology as a conduit. Social media has been touted as presenting a fresh direction for marketing by allowing companies to talk with consumers, as opposed to talking at them.[5]

Social media utilities create opportunities for the use of both inductive and deductive logic by their users. Claims or warrants are quickly transitioned into generalizations due to the manner in which shared statements are posted and viewed by all.

Now how social are the social media?

Lets take a look at Facebook where you can set your status message to EVERYONE...
What does this everyone mean? Does this mean that not only your friends and friends of friends but realy everyone on Facebook who is in YOUR FACEBOOK NETWORK can see this...? No it does not Facebook is all about the Friends networks...
But the new newsfeed does not even allow you to post to all your friends...
If you check my Facebook Profile you can see that many items do not get any comments....simply because they never ever show up in any newsfeed!
I did very much testing on Facebook and they seem to have a wonderful math system for their censorship! Facebook does not like people who use Facebook too much...
And the best way to slow them down is to simply fade out these members!

I understand that Facebook has to do everything to stop spammers, but trusted members who simply post their causes or groups should not be punished for just caring!

Making a difference in Facebook is getting more and more difficult!
Too much activity on Facebook will get you disabled but first they simply fade
out your postings! Not very social....But we can still try to do what we can..
Maybe Facebook will get more social if they realy start earning BIG MONEY?
Lets hope so.....

I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will NOT refuse to do the something that I can do." - Helen Keller

11th Annual TBLI CONFERENCE™ EUROPE in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, The Netherlands (November 3, 2009) - The 11th annual TBLI CONFERENCE™ EUROPE is held in Amsterdam from November 12-13, 2009. This year’s conference highlights worldwide health insurance and related human rights issues, the Credit Crunch and its effects on investment ethics values and investment, and the Copenhagen Climate Council and its consequences for investment portfolios.

TBLI’s first keynote speaker is Wendell Potter, former Executive Manager at the 5th largest US health insurance, who resigned as he personally witnessed the inhuman results of health insurance coverage practices. Second keynote speaker is Lewis Gordon Pugh, environmentalist, swimmer and initiator of The Polar Defense Project.

The special focus of this international event is on “Retooling the Economy”: educating the financial community and showing sustainable investment opportunities as profitable alternatives for conventional dysfunctional investment models which caused the Credit Crunch and climate change. The aim of TBLI CONFERENCE EUROPE 2009 is to show the financial community that worldwide recession and the bankruptcy of old investment models and values provide new opportunities for environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing.

5 investment firms will be winners of the 2009 ESG Awards by TBLI GROUP and IPE (International Pensions Europe) during a special award ceremony and dinner on 12 November. Special delegations of financial experts from the Emirates Foundation, Viet Nam Holding AM and Eastern European Countries to Amsterdam will be hosted.

More than 100 finance experts take part in 20 specialized workshops and 2 expert roundtables, actively demonstrating new and successful investment opportunities to investors from pension funds, banks, hedge funds and investment funds. Maritta Koch-Weser, Chair of The Global Exchange for Social Investment (GEXSI) moderates the panel on Social Entrepreneurs, explaining the benefits of Peer-to-Peer lending as an answer to the lack of credit in the current financial market. This year’s conference is especially sponsored by the City of Amsterdam and the event isl officially opened by Job Cohen, Mayor of Amsterdam. Next TBLI Conferences for 2010 and 2011 will be held in London and Tokyo.

Triple Bottom Line Investment (TBLI) is the most rapidly growing form of new investing, which benefits three parties: investor, nature and society alike. TBLI GROUP™ specializes in Triple Bottom Line Investing (TBLI) – investing that benefits investor, nature and society. Based in Amsterdam, TBLI GROUP™ seeks to raise awareness of sustainable investment in the financial sector, by assisting investors and providing a global network for parties who share in this goal. Please Sign! Stop Animal Sacrifice in Nepal Petition

Can you picture 7,000 young buffaloes being rounded up and killed by a thousand drunk men carrying large knives? A festival where 200,000 animals are killed to please a goddess?

This is exactly what  will happen from November 24, 2009, onwards in Nepal. The Gadimai Festival in Bariyarpur, Bara District, is held each 5 years. The mass sacrifice turns the entire area into a marshy land of blood. The Animal Welfare Network Nepal together with Anti-sacrifice Alliance want to end this bloody, cruel practice.

Please sign this petition:

For more information go to Worship Without Cruelty at http://animalnepal.org/campaigns_wwc.htm
To the Ministers of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Peace Secretariat and Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

Dear Sirs,

We, the signatories, call on the Nepal authorities to end extreme animal cruelty at Gadimai Festival. Each five years in the month of Kartik devotees sacrifice around 200,000 animals (including 6,000 young male buffaloes). Innocent creatures are killed en masse in a very unorganised manner by drunk devotees who enter the temple area with khukuri knives to cut off the heads of frightened buffaloes.

No one can adequately explain why these practices are carried out year after year – except to say they are ‘traditional’. This however is not a valuable argument to commence these practices; Nepal, realising the adverse effects, has abolished a number of ‘traditions’ in the past, including human sacrifice and widow burning.

We feel the time has come to abolish the above practices for the following reasons:

1. Nepal is concerned about the welfare of its precious flora and fauna, and has signed a number of international Wildlife Treaties followed by the introduction of the Meat Act, which introduces humane killing of livestock and poultry. The cruelty displayed in these so-called traditions completely contradicts the spirit and gestures of these treaties and acts.

2. As tourists are abhorred by such practices, the festivals will have an adverse effect on tourism, an industry which provides the country with much-needed financial returns. Those foreigners who experience or come to know the extent of sacrifice in this country leave Nepal confused and with a heavy heart, rather than uplifted by its paradoxical beauty and friendliness.

3. Cruelty against animals harms society as a whole; it signals and normalises insensitivity in children who can become numb to the suffering of living beings, it is also known to influence certain people to commit violence on other humans. Now that the armed conflict has ended Nepal needs peaceful practices that educate the next generation for a harmonious society.

4. Sacrifices often strengthen the vested interest of those who benefit from superstition-based beliefs and rituals. As Nepal is moving ahead to become a more fully democratic, egalitarian society, it is crucial to challenge age-old beliefs which are not beneficial and drain the resources of the poor and needy.

We urge you to end the violent practices and help Nepal move towards a truly peaceful country, and in keeping with its international image. This can be done by introducing and enforcing a much-needed Animal Welfare Act to curb animal cruelty and by promoting genuine animal welfare activities across the country.

We trust that you will support these measures (which are becoming more popular by the day, around the globe and thus promote non-violent cultural practices in Nepal.

Will you help me fight FGM?

Female genital mutilation is not an “exotic issue”: Today, FGM is one of the most systematic and widespread mistreatment and violation of childrens’ rights worldwide. Every year, more than three million victims are submitted to this violence on the African continent alone. Those victims from Yemen, the united Arab Emirates, Iraq and Iran, Indonesia and Malaysia have even to be added.
The extent of FGM might be hard to believe: Up to 90 % of a country´s or a region´s female children (e.g., in Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, Gambia, Sierra Leone, etc.) are victimized by genital mutilations. The vast majority of the victims is physically and mentally damaged and traumatised for life. We have to assume that today, more than 200 million victims exist worldwide.

As long as this violence is not stopped, as long as the deliberate damaging of whole female generations goes on, broad and lasting development in these countries or regions remains impossible. This means, that the end of female genital mutilation and the consequent protection of future generations is a very important key for lasting development.

Every organisation that works with a sponsored child system has a special responsibility and duty of care for the sponsored children: All above mentioned organisations market sponsorships for female children in countries and regions where genital mutilations are widespread.
Have you ever asked the organisations whether and how the sponsored girls are protected from female genital mutilation? Not yet? We did!

We are not talking about some individually viewed cases, but up 400,000 sponsored girls in 18 countries to whom protection is denied!

Please find here an interview with Lucy Mashua, who originally comes from the South of Kenya and who decided to take the campaign under her patronage:
Lucy Mashua
Lucy Mashua comes from South Kenya, from a Maasai family. Today, the 30-years old woman lives in Dallas where, after a long Odysse, she found a new home. At age of nine, she became a victim of female genital mutilation, at age of twelve, she was sold to a 53-year old man, did escape from him - and dedicated herself already at age of 21 to the protection of girls from genital mutilation. Countless girls she helped to flee from this violence. Several times, she has been arrested, raped and tortured by the Clan-chefs - but imperturbably she continued to fight for the most fundamental rights of women and children - especially the fight for an end of FGM. About these practices she says: "Every year, thousands of girls and women die from female genital mutilation - if this is not genocide, what is it then?" ... "I want to be a voice for the voiceless" Lucy claims and raises her voice - strong, consequent and imperturbable. Lucy Mashua supports our campaign to protect sponsored girl-children in projects of German and International development agencies.

She talked with us about her decision.

What you can do

Until now, PLAN International, World Vision, Kindernothilfe (Germany) and ChildFund Germany have not felt prompted to protect the sponsored girls from FGM. One reason for their ignorant attitude is the fact that donors mostly do not consequently demand the protection of their sponsored children.
As long as you, as a donor, accept the organisations' policy of FGM-tolerance and silently continue to wire money to their accounts, you encourage them to retain this policy.

But if you think that it's time for a change you can play an important part in this – and it does not cost you any money, but only a few minutes of your time and a few clicks:

Simply sign one, several or all of the following letters and send them to the board of PLAN International, World Vision, Kindernothilfe (Germany) and Children's fund CCF / ChildFund Germany.
By signing these letters:

- you call for the stipulation of the safety and protection from FGM of the sponsored girls in the preconditions for support for the communities,

- you call for a careful selection of the project partners, means that only those communities are supported who respect the most fundamental children's and human rights and and so proof their will to develop,

- you call for an investment of donations in the most economic and effective way.

Who will defend the whales this year?

Ask Greenpeace why they collect money to defend the whales!
And than surrender them to the whalers!...

I keep on getting messages from Greenpeace that i should support them to SAVE THE WHALES....

If you need the proof that you cannot trust GREENPEACE check this: We are going to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to do what we can to ensure that happens and will use a range of peaceful means to defend the whales, including putting ourselves between the whale and the harpoon.......
Now what Greenpeace does is use a lot of means ..but not to defend the whales!

Whaledefenders stop the killing has now18.000 members many of them keep on donating to the
wrong whaledefenders! They have no idea about GREENPEACE and SEA SHEPHERD...
People must want to learn the truth or they will not find it....
Greenpeace tells people their truth...
Sea Shepherd tells people their truth..

Who do the people believe more?
Who is spending more money on PROPAGANDA?

Why cannot all the people who want to save whales work together?
There is only ONE WHALING MAFIA and only ONE WAY to defend the whales!

Paul Watson has made many public requests for Greenpeace to reveal the location of the whaling fleet or otherwise cooperate with Sea Shepherd in the Southern Ocean when the ships of both organisations have been there simultaneously.

Oneness? Harmony? Do you think that GREENPEACE cares enough about the whales to start defending them again?

Captain Paul Watson: We provide Greenpeace with coordinates for the whalers, and we expected them to return the favor.

We passionately want to stop whaling, and will do so peacefully. That's why we won't help Sea Shepherd. Greenpeace is committed to non-violence and we'll never, ever, change that, not for anything. If we helped Sea Shepherd to find the whaling fleet we'd be responsible for anything they did having got that information, and history shows that they've used violence in the past, in the most dangerous seas on Earth. For us, non-violence is a non-negotiable, precious principle. Greenpeace will continue to act to defend the whales, but will never attack or endanger the whalers.... Read More

Captain Paul Watson: Sea Shepherd has never committed an act of violence. We have never injured anyone. We have never been convicted of a felony (Greenpeacers have). We have never been sued (Greenpeace has). Greenpeace has also been reported by Japan... for ramming a Japanese whaler and then denounces us for doing the same thing. In actual fact neither Greenpeace nor Sea Shepherd have deliberately rammed a Japanese whaler. In both cases, it was Japan that imitated the ramming. The latest Greenpeace tactic has been to steal property from the Japanese mail. The Greenpeace policy of bearing witness is just another way of saying that they are cowards. You don't watch whales die and just take their pictures. You intervene and you stop the killing - that is real non-violence - to stop the killing without hurting anyone.

This letter from Greenpeace to Paul Watson is good food for thought...
If you are still supporting the false whaledefenders...LIES LIES LIES

Who do YOU believe more?

Fact is that SEA SHEPHERD is the only organisation that will be out there in the whale
sanctuary defending whales!

Invite your friends to join the whaledefenders stop the killing!

Join GREEDPEACE and tell all your friends the truth about GREENPEACE

If you want to save the whales SUPPORT SEA SHEPHERD forget Greenpeace and all the other wonderful organisations that are wasting money on campaigns..instead of saving whales!

I feel like i am the only person in the world who thinks that a BOYCOTT is a fair and a good way to stop the killing!
What do you think will it help?if Toyota Panasonic Sony and all the other wonderful Japanese brands speak up in Japan and tell the government to stop wasting TAX money to support the WHALING MAFIA

Do you think about your impact when you buy?

The new ECOnomy?!
The rising consumer demand for environmentally conscious products provides a great chance and an even bigger challenge for designers and product developers in the sporting goods industry to increase the amount of reusable and sustainable materials!

The outdoor industry and the new ECOnomy?

The Outdoor Industry can be the leading force in the new
ECOnomy! Patagonia is the role model for the complete sporting goods industry and take a look at what Retailers like Globetrotter in Germany, REI in the USA are doing! They are both market leaders both in Europe and the USA and both show the rest the way to do business!

More and more people think before they buy things..not just about what they like most, but also about the negative impact of the products they buy! The footprint for products will be normal in 2015! And again Patagonia is leading with the examined life The Footprint Chronicles!

Patagonia is working to have all their clothes be fully recyclable by 2010 (more info on some of the new products that fit this criteria soon) and the Footprint Chronicles in some ways helps to accomplish this goal. Not only does it offer insightful information on the impact of a Patagonia product (they hope to highlight five new products each season), but it also serves as a re-evaluation of product development, allowing Patagonia to focus their energy on improving areas of their methodology that need it most and where they can truly make a difference.

What have we done to the wordl!
What about all the dream....
What about APATHY!!!
What about Nature's worth
What about crying whales..
What about children dying..

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying Earth these weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaah oooooooooo
Aaaaaaaaah oooooooooo

What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...

Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice

A Survival Guide for Environmental and Animal Rights Activists

If you make a difference for the environment
or animals you might need this...

Operation Backfire

A Survival Guide
for Environmental and
Animal Rights Activists

In 2004, several separate FBI investigations into the animal
rights and environmental movements were combined into
Major Case #220, also called Operation Backfire. Shortly
after, the FBI’s top official in charge of domestic terrorism
announced that “The No. 1 domestic terrorism threat
is the eco-terrorism, animal-rights movement.” As a result,
members of these movements face heightened levels of law
enforcement surveillance, infiltration and harassment.

Sea Shepherd Campaign Report Current Issues

Aug 2, 2009
We must stop Commercial whaling!

Join us and invite your friends than share this please!

Sea Shepherd Campaign Report
Current Issues (August 2009)

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is an activist organization operating on a global level in all the world’s oceans on a very limited budget to intervene against illegal activities that exploit marine species and eco-systems.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is not a protest organization. Our clients are marine species and our approach is to uphold international conservation law in accordance with the principles of the United Nation World Charter for Nature.

Thirty years ago on July 16th, 1979, Captain Paul Watson hunted down and rammed the pirate whaler Sierra and ended her illegal career. In 1980, Sea Shepherd commandos sank half the Spanish whaling fleet. Since then, Sea Shepherd has become more effective and more active. There is no other organization on the oceans doing what Sea Shepherd does. We are unique, and we get results, measuring our success by inflicting economic loss on the criminals we oppose and saving the lives of their victims.

We have two rules. (1) We do not take actions that will cause death or injury to our opposition and (2) we act to uphold laws, not to break them.

Since Sea Shepherd was founded in 1977, we have not caused a single injury to any person and we have never been convicted of a felony crime.

We have four priority campaigns at the moment:

1. Objective – Ending illegal Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary

Since 2002, we have been actively opposing illegal Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Our objective is to sink the Japanese whaling fleet economically. We have sent five voyages of intervention and we are presently preparing the sixth voyage of intervention to return to the coast of ..Antarctica.. in December 2009. The Steve Irwin operates from late November until the end of March and the rest of the year is spent in drydock and alongside the dock for repairs, maintenance and improvements. The down time is also used to raise the funding needed to finance the campaign. We have cost the Japanese whaling industry their profits for five years and cut their quotas in half. We will continue this campaign until we drive the Japanese fleet from the seas forever. This last voyage saved 305 whales. We saved 500+ in 2007/2008, 500+ in 2006/2007 and 83 whales in 2005/2006. We have the Japanese whaling fleet in debt and on the ropes financially. We will keep the pressure on until we bankrupt the industry.

2. Objective – The defense and protection of the Galapagos National Park Marine Reserve.

Since 1999, Sea Shepherd has been stationed in the Galapagos. We brought a fast patrol boat to give to the National Park. We help maintain a surveillance barge at Wolf and Darwin.Islands to intercept poachers. We have a canine unit attached to the police force to sniff out shark fins at the ports and airports. We have intercepted and arrested poaching vessels, confiscated tens of thousands of illegal shark fins and hundreds of thousands of illegally taken sea cucumbers. We shut down a planned iron dust dumping project and we cut the nets of tuna seiners fishing on dolphins and taking tuna illegally. The Galapagos is our line in the sand. If we cannot save this profoundly beautiful eco-system, we will be unable to save any threatened place on this planet.

In addition we have busted poachers at ..Cocos.. ..Island.. off the coast of ..Costa Rica and Malpelo Island off the coast of Colombia. We have supplied radar, rifles, radios, boats and equipment to the rangers of Cocos, Malpelo and the Galapagos.

3. Objective – Ending illegal whaling in the North Atlantic by Norway, Iceland and Denmark.

In 1986, we sank half the Icelandic whaling fleet and shut down their illegal operations for two decades. In 1992 we sank the whaler Nybraena in the ..Norwegian Lofoten Islands and the whaler Senet in Southern Norway in 1994. Since then five additional whalers have been sunk in Norway (one this year) keeping the insurance premiums on whaling ships extremely high. In 1994, the Sea Shepherd ship Whales Forever battled the Norwegian Navy off the coast of Northern Norway to disrupt Norwegian whaling activities. Sea Shepherd continues to oppose illegal whaling activities in the ..North Atlantic.. as a priority objective.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society first intervened against the slaughter of pilot whales in 1983 when we disrupted one of the hunts. We returned in 1985 and 1986 to disrupt the killing operations and to produce the BBC documentary Black Harvest. We returned again in 2000 to disrupt the slaughter. Captain Paul Watson is banned from Denmark and the Faeores but the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society continues to work towards the end of this horrific annual massacre of pilot whales.

4. Objective - The defense of the Bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean

Sea Shepherd is presently looking for a ship to defend the Bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean. With more than 600 poaching vessels operating, the Bluefin tuna is threatened with imminent extinction in the wild. We intend to do everything we can to prevent this ecological disaster.

Other Concerns and Objectives:

Instituto Sea Shepherd Brazil is taking major fishing companies to court in Brazil. for illegal fishing and the unlawful slaughter of dolphins. In South Africa we are working to protect Great White Sharks. We have donated $25,000 to Francois Hugo and Seal alert to oppose the killing of Fur seals in Namibia. but we had to discontinue support when he refused to account for expenditures. We are presently working on strategies to utilize against this slaughter but this project is made difficult by the fact that the killing takes place on Namibian soil. This is the same situation in Taiji ..Japan.. where in 2003 we freed 15 dolphins with the result that two of our crew spent four week in jail and we were banned from Wayayama Prefecture. Since then, working with other groups we contributed to the making of the film The Cove. We are hoping that this documentary will exert the pressure needed to shut down this atrocity. In ..Canada.. we have opposed the slaughter of seals on the ice since 1976 and we have lost ships, been beaten, jailed and banned from the country but this year with the ban on Canadian seal products by Europe, our efforts have been rewarded. The commercial seal hunt in Canada has been struck a mortal blow and we will keep the pressure on to end it forever.

Sea Shepherd is mobilizing surfers and scuba divers, yachters and scientists in the cause of saving our oceans. We have helped produce a major television show Whale Wars on Animal Planet and Discovery and we have been featured in nine documentary films including Black Harvest by the BBC (1986), Blue Rage (1992), Ocean Warrior Both films by ..Peter Brown.. (1995), Sharkwater by ..Rob Stewart.. (2007, The Edge of the World by ..Tim Gorski.. and ..Dan Stone.. (2008), Pirate for the Sea by ..Ron Colby.. (2008). The Cove by Louie Psihoyoss (2009), Oceans by ..Jacques Perrin.. (To be released in 2010). A tenth documentary is in the works by Trish Dolman of Screen Siren in Canada

The camera is the most powerful weapon in the world and we use it when and where we can.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has recently had major profiles in major publications around the world including the New Yorker, The London Sunday Times, The Melbourne Age, Figaro, La Monde, etc and major surfing, scuba diving and boating magazines. Sea Shepherd campaigns regularly make headline news around the world.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is growing without having to use donor’s money to finance massive direct mail campaigns, advertising campaigns or public relation expenditures. Funds donated to Sea Shepherd go directly to campaigns. This has kept us small but efficient and effective.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society can be contacted at www.Seashepherd.org

The Society is headquartered in ..Friday Harbor, Washington with offices or representatives in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, South Africa, Singapore, Ecuador, Brazil, the United States, Canada, Australia, Spain, Monaco,.Hungary and Switzerland.
