Sign the petition to support a safe future for whales

Dear friends!

The 61st annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) is coming up next week in Madeira, Portugal. Once again, pro-whaling nations and their supporters will be undermining hard-won conservation measures for whales.

We need your help, as whales will be facing the very real risk of the return of commercial whaling.

Humane Society International has been working for decades to secure protection for whales at IWC. Since the ban on commercial whaling was enacted by the IWC in 1986, whale populations have made a comeback -- after centuries of commercial whaling that threatened many species with extinction. However, they are still extremely vulnerable to environmental and man-made harms, including the continued whaling from countries that have found loopholes in or have decided to defy the IWC ban on commercial whaling.

At the meeting of the IWC next week, countries such as Denmark and Switzerland are planning to show their support for a return to commercial whaling. Moreover, the United States -- traditionally, a forerunner in whale protection -- is losing steam in the battle. Faced with these obstacles, it is time for the citizens of the world to advocate for a new future for whales. It is time for whales to be safe from commercial hunting everywhere they feed, breed, and migrate. No exceptions.

TAKE ACTION
Please show your support for whales by signing the petition calling on world leaders to declare a global whale sanctuary! We will send your signature to top governmental officials in IWC member countries in time for the IWC meeting next week. Please tell your friends and family how they can help, too.
