We must BE the CHANGE!


How we can save the Planet and Live in Peace & Harmony

The benefits of development are not shared equitably and the gap between rich and poor is widening.
Injustice, poverty, ignorance, and violent conflict are widespread and the cause of great suffering.
The dominant patterns of production and consumption are causing environmental devastation, the depletion of resources, and a massive extinction of species.
We must realize that when basic needs have been met, human development is primarily about being more, not having more.
We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.
Everyone shares responsibility for the present and future well-being of the human family and the larger living world.

First Ghent in Belgium opted to go veggie every Thursday, then Sir Paul McCartney clubbed together with Chris Martin and Sheryl Crow to promote "meat- free Mondays". And now Europe's first vegetarian butcher has opened in The Hague. De Vegetarische Slager opened its doors in mid-October, selling a mix of vegetables and meat replacement products made from protein-rich lupin seeds. It's all the idea of lupin farmer Jaap Korteweg, who collaborated with chef Marco Westmaas and Party for the Animals senator Niko Koffeman to create the meat- free treats.

"Supermarkets and health food stores offer a growing variety of meat substitutes aimed at vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians [semi-vegetarians] and everyone else who has decided to eat less meat," says Koffeman. "Our dream was a store dedicated to meat substitutes in the same way a butcher is dedicated to meat, with meat substitutes that have the same bite, structure and taste as the real thing."

Lupin seeds were apparently a staple of the Ancient Roman diet, and they're coming back into fashion thanks to the efforts of Koffeman and Co. In a blind test for Belgian radio, 14 out of 15 meat eaters thought the lupin product was real meat, and nearby butcher's shop Arno Wapenaar has started selling it alongside the conventional cuts. What are you really feeding your family?‏

When you buy fish for dinner, you probably think that the fish listed on the label is actually the type of fish you are buying.

But what if the fish you cook for your family isn’t what it says it is?

Recent studies have found that seafood may be mislabeled as often as 25 to 70 percent of the time, disguising species that are less desirable, cheaper or more readily available - which means you could be feeding your family mislabeled, unsustainable fish.

The FDA has the power to enforce better labeling, increase inspections, and improve seafood safety, but they won’t do it unless we push them.

You have the right to know where the fish you eat comes from, what kind it is, when and how it was caught and if it was farmed. You should be able to trace your meal from boat to plate. If companies aren’t telling you the truth about what fish you’re buying, why should you trust them to follow health and safety laws?

But lax restrictions and import controls mean you could be eating seafood that:

  • Is really a cheaper fish, like tilapia, labeled as a more expensive fish to drive up profits;
  • Was “laundered” by mixing illegally caught fish with legitimate catches, undermining conservation laws;
  • You are allergic to, but you don’t know it because it’s mislabeled;
  • You think is a sustainable choice, but is really a severely overfished species.

Eating fish should be a healthy, smart choice for you and your family. You should be able to know more about the fish you are feeding your family. But until the FDA makes combating seafood fraud a priority, we won’t really know what we’re eating- and that’s unacceptable.

The 2011 first-quarter profit reports are in. Exxon's profits soared more than $10 billion, up a whopping 69 percent from last year. Shell reported profits of $6.9 billion, up by more than 30 percent. And despite the devastating Gulf oil spill, BP made more than $5 billion. Adding to Big Oil's massive piggybank of profits: government-funded tax credits and subsidies, totaling $4 billion a year. Meanwhile, funding for protecting our air, water and climate is being cut.

The good news is that in the last few weeks, pressure has been mounting on the federal government to do something about this. President Obama is pushing to end tax credits and subsidies for Big Oil. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has pledged to bring this issue to vote shortly.

With environmental and climate catastrophe looming, gas prices soaring, and untoward profits and public opinion on our side, we have a real shot at ending oil subsidies now.
But we need you to help make our voices heard. Write to your U.S. senator about this issue today.

Decades ago, the brilliant physicist Albert Einstein said the following:

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet .”

These clear words seem even more amazing when one considers that they were spoken at a time when people knew little about how the food on their plate affected their health or how it was connected to the environment, the world’s climate, world hunger, animal rights and human rights. If Albert Einstein had been familiar with current scientific evidence, surely his words would have been a bit different:

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegan diet.”

A vegan diet is one that contains no animal products. If well planned and well balanced, it is the healthiest diet one can follow, benefi ting the environment, the world’s climate, animals and humans. Because following a vegan diet and a vegan lifestyle can bring such great benefi ts to each and every one of us, I have decided to publish this little booklet for the sake of society – especially for our children and grandchildren – as well as for the benefi t of the environment, the world’s climate and animals. In order to make the healthiest decisions for ourselves and the planet, we need to have the best available information.

This brochure and the website www.ProVegan.info are a contribution in the fight against the unlimited madness of mankind. The resulting devastating effects are consciously or unconsciously ignored by most people. The majority of people are (still) willing to cause global warming, to torture and kill animals, to support the starvation of millions of people, to plunder the oceans, and to ruin their own health just because of their taste preferences for animal products.

Of course, it is also important to understand that following a vegan diet does not mean that we have to miss out on anything. Quite the contrary – a vegan diet is a pure feast, as numerous vegan cookbooks and restaurants have proved.
